Machine Description
Released by United Manufacturing Company of Chicago in November 1948, Blue Skies is a sailing and relaxation-themed electro-mechanical pinball machine. This single-player game emerged as the first United pin game advertised from the companys new 3401 N. California Avenue location, following the completion of their 70,000 square-foot facility planned since October 1947.
The playfield features two flippers and four kick-out holes, representing the streamlined design aesthetic of late 1940s pinball. Blue Skies captures the post-war optimism and leisure-focused themes popular in American entertainment, with sailing imagery reflecting the increasing interest in recreational activities during the period of economic prosperity following World War II.
Blue Skies holds historical significance as a milestone for United Manufacturing Company, marking their transition to the new California Avenue production facility. Featured in Compressed Air magazine (December 1995) and documented in The Pinball Compendium 1930s-1960s, the machine represents United Manufacturings contribution to late 1940s pinball design during a formative period when the industry was establishing the standards that would define electro-mechanical pinball for decades.
