Machine Description
Released by D. Gottlieb & Company in March 1971, Now is a psychedelic-themed electro-mechanical pinball machine designed by Ed Krynski with artwork by Gordon Morison. Gottlieb produced 1,125 units of this four-player game, capturing the counterculture aesthetic of the early 1970s.
The playfield features two flippers, three pop bumpers, six standup targets, two sets of 4-bank drop targets, and two ball kickers, with a unique right-side free ball lane. The machine notably omits slingshots, an unusual design choice for its era. The game supports 5-digit scoring with a maximum displayed score of 9,999 points per player, though European operators sometimes modified machines to accommodate real counters for higher scores.
The psychedelic theme is executed through Gordon Morison's vibrant artwork depicting contemporary 1970s fashion and swirling patterns characteristic of the era's visual culture. The collaboration between designer Ed Krynski and artist Gordon Morison represents Gottlieb's effort to appeal to younger players during a period when the company was competing with emerging entertainment technologies.
