Designed by Pat Lawlor following his success with The Addams Family, this machine masterfully captured the essence of Rod Serling's classic television series while pushing the boundaries of pinball design.
The machine's innovative features included the first-ever 'Power Field' magnetic ball control system, a unique gumball machine that dispensed pinballs, and the 'Powerball' - a white ceramic ball that was immune to magnets and scored differently than standard balls. The playfield was incredibly complex, featuring 3 main flippers, 6 balls, multiple playfield levels, and an astonishing 39 different modes of play. These technical achievements made it one of the most mechanically sophisticated pinball machines of its era.
Twilight Zone's theme integration was exceptional, incorporating numerous elements from the TV series including the Door Panel, Clock Chaos, and the famous 'Power' shot into the upper playfield. The machine's audio featured authentic clips from Rod Serling and replicated the show's memorable theme music. With approximately 15,235 units produced, it became Bally's third best-selling machine of the 1990s.
Today, Twilight Zone is consistently ranked among the greatest pinball machines ever made, particularly praised for its deep ruleset and replay value. It represents the pinnacle of DMD-era pinball design and continues to be highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, maintaining its position as a benchmark against which modern pinball machines are measured.
